John G. Herriot earned his B.S. in mathematics and physics at the University of Manitoba in 1937 and his Ph.D. in mathematics at Brown University in 1941. He first taught at Stanford from 1942-1944, leaving to do research in the Ames Aeronautical Laboratory at Moffett Field. He returned to Stanford in 1946 as assistant professor of mathematics, becoming full professor in 1956; he retired from teaching in 1982.
